In short
- From round two, teams with the same number of points play against each other, no one meets the same opponent twice.
- Number of rounds = rounded logarithm of two teams. Eight teams: 3 rounds, 16 teams: 4, 32 teams: 5.
- In the event of a tie, Buchholz decides the sum of your opponents' points.
How a round is created
Round one is drawn. The teams then stand on points. Win 1, draw 0.5, loss 0. The top two play against each other, then the next, as long as they haven't seen each other in this tournament.
If the number is odd, the weakest team without a previous bye gets a bye and a point, as for a win. A bye does not occupy any board or field.
How many rounds
Enough to leave an undefeated team: the logarithm of the teams rounded up. Eight teams: 3 rounds. Five teams: also 3. 16 teams: 4. More laps separate the midfield teams more cleanly, but cost the day.
With eight teams and three rounds, each team plays three games, not seven as in everyone against everyone. That's why chess, card games and many e-sports evenings use the system when there are 16 players and the evening ends at 11 p.m.
Buchholz, and what is missing
In the event of a tie, Buchholz counts: the sum of your opponents' points. Whoever had stronger opponents is at the front. Buchholz is recalculated after each registered round.
No Elo numbers, no Feinbuchholz, no color changes like in chess. The pairing follows the point group without repetition, not the Dutch system with its tables. That's enough for a club tournament. Not for a ranked chess championship.
